Our Origin

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is a Major Archiepiscopal Church in full communion with the Apostolic See of Rome. The Church is led by the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly in India, Mar Raphael Thattil. It is one of the 23 autonomous Eastern Catholic Churches within the Catholic communion and is the second largest, with the Ukrainian Catholic Church being the largest. The Syro-Malabar Church follows the East-Syrian liturgy, which dates back to the 3rd century.Renowned for its deep spirituality and high number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, the Syro-Malabar Church is considered one of the most vibrant Catholic Churches worldwide, with over four million members and a rich, fascinating history.

Syro-Malabar Catholics, also known as “St. Thomas Christians,” trace their faith and origins to the missionary work of St. Thomas the Apostle, who arrived in Kodungallur, Kerala, India, in 52 AD. After preaching and establishing Christian communities across India, St. Thomas was martyred in Mylapur, Chennai, in 72 AD.

Syro Malabar Community in Springfield

Since the 1970s, Brisbane has seen a significant number of Malayalee Catholic families migrating from India and various other parts of the world, including Catholics from different rites, such as the Syro-Malabar rite. These families integrated into their local suburban parishes. As Malayalee priests of Syro-Malabar heritage arrived in Brisbane, they began celebrating Holy Mass in the Syro-Malabar Liturgy on a voluntary basis, in response to mutual demand, as an expression of love and fellowship. This led to the formation of organised prayer communities in various local areas.

In 2013, as the number of Malayalee Catholic families grew in Springfield, Devasia Joseph and Sunil Kunnath initiated regular gatherings for the Holy Rosary and other prayers in the Syro-Malabar tradition. Subsequently, Devasia Joseph approached Fr. Mauro Conte, the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Southern Cross Parish in Springfield, to request a venue for their gatherings and to start Sunday Catechism classes for the children. Fr. Conte wholeheartedly supported the community and offered the Springfield Catholic church as their meeting place.

In April 2015, with the establishment of the Syro-Malabar Eparchy in Melbourne, Bishop Bosco Puthur appointed Fr. Peter Kavumbaram as the Chaplain for Queensland. Fr. Peter then reached out to the Springfield community and invited us to join the Syro-Malabar Eparchy, leading to the formation of St Joseph's Syro-Malabar Community in Springfield.

The Syro-Malabar Community in Springfield is a thriving community, growing in both numbers and unity of faith. Our main highlights are:

  • Around 350 people attending Malayalam Holy Mass in Springfield on every Sunday

Safeguarding

Safeguarding refers to the range of plans and activities that are put in place to protect children and adults who may be vulnerable to abuse and neglect from being exploited or harmed.

Safeguarding in the church community - making our churches safe for children, young people and vulnerable adults - is everyone's responsibility.

The diocesan safeguarding team provide professional advice and training to parishes to ensure they can meet that responsibility, as well as support those who may have suffered abuse or exploitation in a church setting.

Everyone involved in church life should know what to do in situations where a child, young person or vulnerable adult may have been harmed. Each parish or benefice should have in place a safeguarding person who knows how to respond and where to seek further help and advice.

Anyone who wishes to report abuse or exploitation needs to know that they can do so and receive the support they need.
